Otherwise titled: Things I Don't Understand
Why do we have stories about serious bullying with teachers as onlookers in some cases, and stories about teachers calling the cops for kids drawing on their desk or bringing a Lego character with a 1" plastic axe to school on the other side? Shouldn't the strict rules governing things like Lego weapons also be broad enough to stop name calling and dirty language directed toward another student? Where's the common sense!
In addition, if they can charge a "bully" with statutory rape, haven't we gone leaps and bounds past the definition of child bullying? There's gotta be a line when it's taken more seriously than just a playground bully.
When did abstinence become a bad thing? I know there are lots (and lots and lots) of different points of view in parenting, so I (vaguely) understand the mind set behind teaching about protected sex in school. What I don't get is the hostility toward abstinence that doesn't even want it brought up in the classroom. Who in their right mind wants their 14 year old (or 15, or 16) having sex, even if it is protected? There is no reason out there not to introduce waiting as a valid option.
How much of human behavior can really be blamed on outside forces, and not on individuals themselves? Are Tiger Woods and Jesse James shirking their personal responsibility by declaring themselves sex addicts? Or, for an entirely different (yet somehow related) thought, will removing Ronald McDonald as the spokesperson for McDonald's or taking fast food ads off of children's programming make kids eat less french fries and more carrot sticks? There seem to be a lot of things going on that we're trying to find a symptom to blame, rather than dealing with the problem.
Totally random and disjointed thoughts, but I feel like there's a lot of weird stuff going on in America right now. We as a nation need to re-prioritize.
In God We Trust.
